The Auburn Tigers went 6-7 in Hugh Freeze’s first year as head coach.

Their passing offense held the team back this season. They ranked 121st in passing yards per game with 162.2.

Hugh Freeze addressed their QB situation after their 13-31 Music City Bowl loss to Maryland. Here’s what Freeze had to say about the position moving forward:

“It’s wide open,” Freeze said. “I’m constantly evaluating players, staff, everything, and if we see that my evaluation has been wrong, then we have to change gears and reevaluate to make us better, then that’s the steps we should make. That position should be an interesting one certainly in spring practice.”

The Tigers addressed the quarterback position by adding the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year from the transfer portal.

The Auburn Tigers added an elite QB from the transfer portal.

Auburn reassessed the QB position by adding Jordan McCloud from the transfer portal. Here’s what McCloud accomplished in his collegiate career.

He started his collegiate career at USF.

Jordan McCloud committed to USF as a three-star recruit for the 2018 season. McCloud redshirted in 2018.

McCloud appeared in every game and started ten in 2019. He completed 124 out of 224 pass attempts for 1,429 yards and threw 12 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

McCloud appeared in eight games and started seven in 2020. He completed 120 out of 194 pass attempts for 1,341 yards and threw nine touchdowns and two interceptions.

McCloud entered the transfer portal after the conclusion of the 2020 season.

He transferred to Arizona.

Jordan McCloud transferred to Arizona for the 2021 season. McCloud appeared in three games and started two in 2021. He completed 48 out of 73 pass attempts for 481 yards and threw two touchdowns and five interceptions. He suffered a season-ending knee and ankle injury that required surgery.

McCloud announced on October 8, 2022, that he was no longer on the team and entered the transfer portal.

He transferred to James Madison.

Jordan McCloud transferred to James Madison for 2023. McCloud led James Madison to an 11-2 record. He completed 281 out of 412 pass attempts for 3,657 yards and threw 35 touchdowns and ten interceptions. He was part of the All-Sun Belt First Team and the Sun Belt Player of the Year.

There will be a QB competition this spring.

Jordan McCloud will have to earn the starting job for the Auburn Tigers. McCloud will compete against Payton Thorne, Holden Geriner, and Walker White.

Does he have what it takes to be a starting QB in the SEC?
