Stanford's football team didn't have many experienced players heading into the 2023 season, but one of the few that did was senior receiver John Humphreys.
While they had three NFL receivers on the roster the past few seasons, Humphreys was the next guy up and also registered 10 starts in the two seasons prior. With Michael Wilson, Elijah Higgins, and Brycen Tremayne off to the league, Troy Taylor and the offense had Humphreys in a position to emerge as the No. 1 receiver.
However, his lone season as the top option was cut short due to an injury. He ended up playing in just two games, recording five catches for 71 yards and a score. While he did have the option to return next season, he took to Instagram on Thursday to announce that he felt it was the right time to hang up the cleats.
Coming out of high school, the Newport Beach (CA) native was ranked as the No. 86 player in the country and chose Stanford over programs such as UCLA, Florida State, Oregon, and Notre Dame among many others.
He will depart Stanford with 58 career catches for 749 yards and three touchdowns.
