Texas Tech fires head coach Matt Wells

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells was relieved of his post on Monday, according to multiple reports. Offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie is expected to be named interim HC.

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram was the first to report the firing.

Wells had a 13-17 record through less than three seasons coaching the Red Raiders. Despite having a 5-3 record on the season, Wells started the season in the hot seat and his departure seemed imminent after last Saturday when his team gave up a 14-point lead to Kansas State and eventually lost 25-24.

The Red Raiders went just 7-16 in Big 12 play during Wells' tenure and, with the loss to Kansas State, are unlikely to make a bowl appearance for a sixth straight year.

Texas Tech has not recorded eight wins in a season since Wells' predecessor, Kliff Kingsbury's, first season as head coach in 2013. Kingsbury is currently in his third season coaching the Arizona Cardinals, who are 7-0 on the current NFL campaign.
