Texas Tech football records 23 positive COVID-19 tests

Coronavirus outbreaks continue to impact college football programs as the NCAA holds out hope that the season can begin in late August amid the ongoing pandemic.

On Friday, The Athletic's Max Olson and ESPN's Adam Rittenberg noted that Texas Tech confirmed 23 football players and staff members returned positive results out of 197 tests in the program's latest round of testing.

Of the 23, two still haven't recovered, but none required hospitalization. Those infected were asked to quarantine for at least 10 days. Exposed individuals were told to self-isolate for two weeks.

As part of this new sports "normal," the UFC, PGA Tour, English Premier League, World Wrestling Entertainment and All Elite Wrestling are among sports and sports-related entities that didn't shut down after receiving positive coronavirus test results among personnel.

Morehouse College canceled football and all fall sports on Friday because of COVID-19 concerns.

SEC insider Paul Finebaum said during an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up" he's heard there is a "very good" chance that the start of the college football season will be delayed due to the uncontrolled virus outbreak.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver suggested the NBA could halt or cancel its 22-team model to crown a champion for the 2019-20 campaign if there is a coronavirus outbreak among personnel once teams arrive at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Florida beginning on July 7.

Texas ordered bars to close on Friday due to virus outbreaks throughout the state.
