Two SEC programs racked up $250K in 'field rushing fines' this past weekend

Fans love rushing the field after a big win add you'd have to imagine that most programs love it as well. Rushing the field or court signifies a win of true significance — generally a huge upset — has happened.

What's not to like?

Well, rushing the field does come with a cost. That's a cost that most fans certainly aren't thinking about as they jump over seats and enter the field of play.

Sure, there's the logistics of thousands of "pedestrians" celebrating on the field of play and the safety concerns that could arise because of that. We saw that earlier this season when Alabama wide receiver Jermaine Burton allegedly hit a fan after the Crimson Tide were downed by Tennessee. Speaking of Tennessee and that upset win over the Tide, the fans carried off one of the uprights in celebration. The Vols had to ultimately try to crowdsource its replacement.

There are also financial costs, as Vanderbilt and South Carolina found out this weekend. Per college insider Brett McMurphy, Vandy was fined $250,000 by the SEC for being a three-time (all-time) offender in the field/court rushing category. South Carolina was fined $100,000 for being a repeat offender.

The unranked Gamecocks (ironically) beat No. 5 Tennessee, 63-38, in a massive win that caused their fans to take the stands. For their part, the Commodores celebrated a 31-24 win over Florida.
