Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman medically cleared, expected to start against Vanderbilt

Less than one month after it was announced that Wake Forest redshirt junior Sam Hartman would be out indefinitely due to a non-football medical condition, the quarterback was medically cleared to return to action on Tuesday. Hartman is expected to start in the Deamon Deacons' second game of the season on Saturday against Vanderbilt.

Through his four seasons with the program, the 23-year-old has registered a school-record 72 touchdowns across 36 games. Hartman ranked first in the ACC in pass attempts (508), interceptions (14) and touchdowns responsible for (50) last season, while finishing second in passing touchdowns (39) and third in pass completions (299) and passing yards (4,228) as well.

"This process has made me appreciate all the people at Wake Forest University and around our football program for how they care for us as student-athletes. I am very appreciative of Dr. Julie Freischlag, Dr. Matthew Goldman, Niles Fleet, and everyone on our medical staff who worked with me throughout this process," Hartman said in a statement. "There will be time for me to tell my complete story, but right now I am just really excited to get back on the field with my teammates and compete each day to help our team get ready for Vanderbilt this Saturday in Nashville. Let's get it, Deacs!"

The signal-caller helped lead Wake Forest to an 11-3 record last season and a victory over Rutgers in the Gator Bowl. Hartman finished the contest with 304 yards and three touchdown passes, winning game MVP honors.
