Wake Forest QB Sam Hartman out indefinitely with non-football medical condition

One of the top quarterbacks in the ACC and all of college football from one year ago is now facing an uncertain future and very likely would not be available when his team opens its 2022 season in September.

It was announced Wednesday morning that Wake Forest redshirt junior Sam Hartman is out indefinitely due to a non-football medical condition. The news comes following a medical evaluation on Tuesday afternoon.

"The results of those tests and subsequent treatment will remove Sam from team activities indefinitely," the school said in a statement. "The timeline for his return to competition is uncertain. In respect for Sam’s privacy and in compliance with HIPAA, no additional details will be shared at this time. Wake Forest athletics medical and athletics training staff are providing Sam and his family with constant support."

According to a report from The Athletic, Hartman sought medical attention following a workout on Tuesday.

In a statement, Hartman called Tuesday a "frustrating day," but expressed appreciation towards the school's medical staff.

"I look forward to attacking this rehabilitation process and I am so appreciative of the support I have received from my family, teammates and coaches," he said.

In four seasons, the 23-year-old has thrown for a program-record 72 touchdowns across 36 games. Hartman ranked first in the ACC in pass attempts (508), interceptions (14) and touchdowns responsible for (50) last season, while finishing second in passing touchdowns (39) and third in pass completions (299) and passing yards (4,228) as well.

He led the Demon Deacons to an 11-3 record last season and a victory over Rutgers in the Gator Bowl. Hartman finished the contest with 304 yards and three touchdown passes and won game MVP honors.
