Watch: The perfect distillation of Iowa football in one play

Iowa football is amazing to watch — not in an "I can't believe how good they are" kind of way, but more of a "Ron Burgundy being impressed by his dog Baxter eating a whole wheel of cheese" kind of way. We don't know how or why they do it, but it's impressive nonetheless.

The latest Hawkeyes misadventure is Iowa football distilled.

Operating out of the shotgun, wide receiver Arland Bruce IV (wearing No. 10) went in motion in what looked like a jet sweep. Either running back Kaleb Johnson (No. 2) misunderstood the assignment or QB Spencer Petras (No. 7) mistimed the snap.

Petras took the snap and immediately stuck the ball out to the right where Bruce IV was supposed to be. Johnson was in his space when he got the ball and made the tackle for loss.

Entering Week 10, Iowa is third worst in total offense (248.6 yards) and seventh worst in scoring offense (16.4 points).

Head coach Kirk Ferentz has received plenty of criticism for what many see as a nepotism hire at the offensive coordinator position. His son, Brian Ferentz, has led the unit to dismal results.

Last month, the older Ferentz had to apologize after insulting a reporter who asked about his decision to keep the younger Ferentz employed, according to USA Today.

Iowa (4-4, 2-3 in Big Ten) had an offensive explosion at Purdue (5-3, 3-2 in Big Ten). The Hawkeyes scored 17 points — already above their season average — in the first half. They began the third quarter with a 75-yard touchdown run to go up 24-3.

No matter how many points Iowa scores, it's refreshing to know some things never change.
