Celtics put Kristaps Porzingis' return from injury on hold

Kristaps Porzingis has missed the Boston Celtics' last nine games with a right soleus strain.

Previously, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski had reported that Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals was a likely target for his return to the rotation. However, on Sunday, the Celtics announced that the veteran big man will remain sidelined.

The Celtics currently lead their series against the Indiana Pacers 3-0. If they win on Tuesday, they will complete a sweep and progress into the NBA Finals.

The Pacers will likely be without star guard Tyrese Haliburton, who re-aggravated a hamstring injury midway through Game 2.

There are pros and cons to some additional rest for Porzingis. On the one hand, it's best to ensure he's as healthy as possible heading into the NBA Finals.

Limiting the risk of him aggravating his injury is key. His presence gives the Celtics a different dimension on both sides of the floor. Once he returns, he will be a major part of their rotation.

However, Porzingis will likely be rusty, as he has missed over a month of basketball. Returning in the NBA Finals, where it's the highest level of basketball in the world, will put him under significant pressure.

There's no time for him to ramp back up or work his way back to fitness. The Celtics need him at his best immediately.

Boston should feel confident of concluding its current series and being crowned Eastern Conference champions. The Celtics haven't needed Porzingis to dominate their current run. Things will be different in the NBA Finals, though. They will need his rim protection and floor spacing. It will also be beneficial to get Al Horford matching up against second units again.

Still, the Celtics' coaching staff are being cautious. We will find out whether Porzingis being rusty is worth the risk in due time.
