Youngstown State assistant banned after hit on Northern Iowa receiver

Youngstown State Penguins assistant coach and director of player personnel Tim Johnson won't be back on the sidelines again during the spring football season.

Youngstown State announced on Monday that Johnson will not be permitted on the sidelines for the remainder of the campaign following an incident involving Northern Iowa Panthers wide receiver Quan Hampton during Saturday's Northern Iowa win that went viral. As Ryan Allison explained for Youngstown television station WKBN, Johnson lowered his shoulder and hit Hampton as the wideout ran out of bounds following a reception:

"I apologize to UNI, Youngstown State, the Missouri Valley Football Conference and our community for what occurred on Saturday," Johnson said in a statement released by the school. "As a member of the YSU Football staff, my actions are held in high regard and that should have never occurred. Again, I deeply apologize to all who have been impacted by my actions."

Per Youngstown State, Johnson is in his first year as a member of the coaching staff. He's in the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame and played in the NFL from 2001-06.

Youngstown State is 0-2 on the season and hosts the Southern Illinois Salukis this coming Saturday.
