Maple Leafs' Craig Berube makes roster move that hints at rebuild plans

The Toronto Maple Leafs have officially been eliminated from the NHL playoffs this season, and their final six games can be used as a testing ground. That is at least what the head coach Craig Berube's latest roster move suggests. On Saturday, Toronto announced it had recalled defenseman William Villeneuve from the AHL's Toronto Marlies. "D William Villeneuve has been recalled from the Toronto Marlies (AHL) on an emergency basis," the Canadian franchise announced. The reason is the recent lower-body injury suffered by Swedish Oliver Ekman-Larsson. That said, Berube confirmed Saturday that Villeneuve, 24, will not play immediately and will begin only as a depth piece in case another injury occurs. Even so, it would not be far-fetched to see Villeneuve finally make his NHL debut, given that the Toronto franchise is already out of playoff contention. His AHL numbers make it interesting to see him at the highest level. In the 2025-26 season, Villeneuve has appeared in 58 games with the Marlies, recording three goals and 25 assists for 28 points. He has accumulated 64 penalty minutes, suggesting the young defenseman brings a heavy physical game — something highly valued by Berube. Maple Leafs could begin auditioning young talent as offseason rebuild looms Villeneuve had already been called up to a couple of Toronto practice sessions during the Olympic break in February, but did not make his debut. At the time, the Toronto Sun interviewed him, and the defenseman revealed he was working on developing a more direct game. "I don't think my game has been exactly what I wanted it to be. But I'm turning a corner and trying to focus on the last stretch of the season and be the player that I know I can be," Villeneuve said. "It's about being a little bit more direct. I think my defending has been a little bit better, but sometimes when you start overthinking, you don't move the puck as quick." As with Villeneuve's case, it cannot be ruled out that Berube recalls other Marlies talents for these final regular-season games, or even gives greater prominence to young players already regularly on the main roster, such as forward Easton Cowan. Perhaps the Maple Leafs will find a couple of interesting solutions heading into next season, which appears set to be a rebuilding campaign.

LeBron James disses two more American cities after profane rant about Memphis

LeBron James is fully embracing his “get off my lawn” era. The Los Angeles Lakers star James made waves this week with some shady comments about the city of Memphis. During an appearance on the “Bob Does Sports” YouTube page, James went on a profane monologue about how he did not like playing in Memphis. He then went on to suggest that the Grizzlies should move to nearby Nashville instead. James received a bit of backlash over his remarks. Speaking with reporters on Saturday, James was asked about the comments and proceeded to double down (while also dissing two other cities in the process). “I’m 41 years old,” said James, per Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “There’s two cities I do not like playing in right now. That’s Milwaukee, and that’s Memphis. What is the problem with that? I don’t like going home [to Cleveland] either. S–t, and I’m from there. People are ridiculous.” In his 24th NBA season, James has spent extended time in every single NBA city. While James only has to travel to Eastern Conference cities once a year these days (including Milwaukee and Cleveland), he still clearly has his likes and dislikes at this point. What is most interesting about James’ latest comments however is the mention of Cleveland. James is a native of Akron, Ohio, and played 11 total seasons with the Cavaliers spanning two separate stints. There has also been some widespread speculation in recent weeks that James could potentially return to Cleveland for a grand farewell tour in 2026-27.

Additional details emerge regarding Tiger Woods' arrest

More information about the Tiger Woods arrest in March continues to surface, and the last few tidbits of news may have started to take a bit of the attention away from the immediate context. One of the most talked-about new details about this news story is the additional mugshot. Whereas the original photo spread across the internet rapidly just after his arrest, the newest photos are getting much more attention based on how different they look, clearly displaying a more injured Woods. The crash report has also been the center of some bizarre new details. Newly released evidence from the scene claims that first responders had to break through some of the vehicle to remove personal items, including golf clubs. It's a small detail, but it doesn't do anything to prevent this accident from seeming to be a chaotic one right from the beginning. The aftermath of Tiger Woods' arrest Away from the scene of the accident, it looks like this case may also begin to expand off the road. Information about the driver in the other vehicle claims that the driver has now hired a lawyer. Although it has yet to be formally filed, this will open up possibilities for civil litigation on top of criminal proceedings. What was most interesting in the bodycam footage that was recently released was the act that Woods questioned whether or not he was being arrested. Although he passed a breathalyzer test, officers did note that he was visually impaired. "I'm getting arrested?" Woods questioned. "Yes, sir," the deputy responded. It has since been reported that Woods has left the country, and his private jet was last seen landing in Zurich, Switzerland, where he will be seeking treatment. Right now, the entire story is far from clear, and we have the full scope of information to deal with, but more and more details continue to come out about the Woods situation.

Boston Celtics Upgrade Breakout Player To Remake Bench, Complete Tax-Saving Plan

The Boston Celtics path to remaking the end of their bench and getting under the tax line without touching any of their regular rotation players (and actually giving one of them a promotion) is now complete, and with room to spare. As you probably remember, the Celtics traded away Xavier Tillman, Josh Minott, and Chris Boucher at the trade deadline without getting a player in return. The Celtics then played a shell game with those three spots at the end of their bench, threading a needle many thought was impossible when the season started. After a series of 10-day contracts, Charles Bassey among them, the Celtics upgraded two rookie contracts to fill two of those roster posts. Max Shulga, drafted 57th overall and initially signed to a two-way contract, was upgraded to partially non-guaranteed standard contract. Amari Williams, drafted 46th overall, was also signed to a similar, partially non-guaranteed standard contract. Charles Bassey then signed two 10-day contracts, the second of which expired today, leaving Boston under the mandatory 14-man roster limit. To fill that, the Celtics made the highly-anticipated move of upgrading Ron Harper Jr.’s deal. It’s a two-year deal that will be similarly structured. Harper has had a breakout season with the Celtics. He’s only averaging 3.4 points per game this season, but he’s had several standout games. He scored 22 points against the San Antonio Spurs, helping make up for Jaylen Brown’s ejection and giving Boston a chance to win. He also had a tremendous performance against the OKC Thunder, where he was a +15 in a two-point loss. So this is a fitting reward for a player who has earned his spot. “Ron has worked,” Joe Mazzulla recently said about Harper Jr. “The way he plays in games against San Antonio and OKC is the way he plays in a state-ready game, it’s the way he plays in a G League games, it’s the way he plays in practice. So he cares about winning, he cares about competing. And he executes the details very well in all settings. And so his ability to think the game and compete is top notch. He's getting better and better.” The upgraded contract means Harper Jr. is now eligible to play in the playoffs, which two-way players are not. The moves have now put Boston about $38,000 under the tax, a miniscule number that is the NBA equivalent of counting out pennies at the cash register (and maybe using the take a penny, leave a penny tray). They still have an open roster spot, and the the $38,000 is enough for them to sign someone on the last day of the season and also carry him into the playoffs in case of an emergency. So it’s possible there's another move yet to come.
