Snoop Dogg memorializes DMX on 'The Tonight Show': 'He's finally got his angel wings'
Snoop Dogg battled DMX for the highly popular Verzuz series last July, but their relationship dated back to 1994.
For Monday's episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon , Snoop took time to memorialize DMX, the Yonkers symbol born Earl Simmons who died aged 50 on April 9 due to complications from a heart attack. The 16-time Grammy nominee began by reflecting on their Verzuz session.
"It meant the world because it gave the world the chance to see two dogs that naturally loved each other celebrating each other in the name of hip-hop," Snoop said, adding: "We had God in the building with us that night, and that makes me feel good about DMX's transition to know that he's off to a better place, and he's finally got his angel wings."
Snoop then revealed that the two iconic emcees first met at a concert in 1994. "We went back to the studio after that," he said. Fallon asked what came to Snoop's mind when thinking back to that night.
"He brought up a story that was so deep and instrumental to our relationship," the 49-year-old continued. "He was like, when you first met me, I was away from him. And he was saying, 'What's happenin'? What's up?' And I was like, 'Get at me, dog!' He was like, 'I took that, and I made that into my song 'Get At Me Dog' because of the way you got at me and said that. I was like, 'That's slick.' So, that night inspired him to create that song 'Get At Me Dog,' which was one of his biggest 'hood records that he put out."
