"Fast & Furious" stars show love to Latino community

Speaking of 2013, also at those awards were presenters Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez, two stars of the "Fast & Furious" franchise. It might seem odd at first glance that Diesel and Rodriguez were there in the first place. Then again, the film franchise owes a lot of its box office success to Latino audiences, so it makes perfect sense that they would show love for this community at one of its biggest events.

Nope we're not done with 2013 just quite yet. On December 9, 2012, Regional superstar Jenni Rivera tragically died in an airplane crash. Rivera's untimely death led to a surge in sales of her last album. This resulted in her winning five Billboard Latin Awards just a couple of months later, including "Artist of the Year."

The world meets Bad Bunny

The crowd at the 2017 Billboard Latin Awards probably didn't know it at the time, but they were witnesses to the ascent of Bad Bunny, an artist that's rapidly becoming one of the hottest Latin acts in the game right now. The Puerto Rican trap artist joined J. Balvin on stage to sing "Si tu novio te deja sola" and pretty much stole the show. Bad Bunny isn't among the performers scheduled for 2018, but don't be surprised if you see him on stage nonetheless — two of his frequent collaborators, Nicky Jam and Ozuna are.

Paulina Rubio, also known as "la chica dorada" ("the golden girl"), is really good at grabbing people's attention. Unfortunately, it's not always for the best reasons. She performed at the 2005 awards wearing a questionable accessory, a Native American headdress.

Vin Diesel, the Reggaeton star

As we've seen already, Vin Diesel is no stranger to the Billboard Latin Awards. But never in a million years did we think the action megastar would actually perform on stage! That's exactly what happened at the 2017 ceremony, when reggaetonero Nicky Jam bragged about making movies with Vin Diesel (he had a small part in "XXX: Return of Xander Cage") before actually bringing him out to sing his hit "El Ganador" with him. Epic.

One of the highlights of the 2009 iteration of the ceremony was Carlos Santana receiving the "Lifetime Achievement Award." Unfortunately, a dead microphone put a slight damper on the festivities when Santana and Mana took the stage to play their megahit "Corazon Espinado." Despite the initial technical difficulty, the superstars rocked the adoring audience.

At the 2006 ceremony, Shakira performed the eventual ubiquitous track with Wyclef Jean.

"Despacito" begins its global domination

The remix version of "Despacito" featuring Justin Bieber was released less than two weeks before the 2017 Billboard Latin Awards were broadcast, which means the crowd at the Watsco Center in Miami was more than ready to sing along and dance to what's hands down the biggest song of that year.
