Watch Camila Cabello give new meaning to 'Cinderella' in first official trailer

Kay Cannon's "musically-driven bold new take" on Cinderella lives up to the billing in the official trailer shared Tuesday (Aug. 3) by Amazon Prime Video, where the movie will stream exclusively beginning Sept. 3.

Camila Cabello stars as the titular classic Disney princess in her film-acting debut. In the trailer, we get our first look at Idina Menzel as the evil stepmother who reminds Cinderella that her love for her deceased father "that stands between you and a life on the street."

Cinderella is determined and plenty motivated to make something of herself and her life, so she uses her time banished away in the basement to handcraft dresses—"Dresses by Ella"—and makes herself a pink gown to attend the ball at which Prince Robert (Nicholas Galitzine) will choose his bride. Of course, her stepmother tells her she isn't allowed to go, only for the fairy godmother (called Fab G this time around and played by Billy Porter) comes to the rescue.

The differences between the original Cinderella plot and this one are poignant. Instead of Fab G magically curating a beautiful gown for Cinderella to impress Prince Robert with, he manifests a chic blue suit. "You said you wanted to be a business woman," he says.

And once Prince Robert declares his love for Cinderella, she isn't immediately swept up into a traditional fairytale life of a princess.

"What about my work?" she tells him. "I don't want a life stuck waiting from a royal box any more than a life confined to a basement. I have dreams that I have to chase."

Cannon's (Pitch Perfect) film also boasts Pierce Brosnan, James Corden and Minnie Driver in the cast. "Covers of songs written by some of the top-selling musical artists of all time" are promised as well, and we already Cabello's chart-topping voice is up for that.

The 24-year-old dropped single "Don't Go Yet," her first new solo music since her sophomore album Romance that hit in December 2019, on July 23. Her third studio album titled Familia is on the way, though it doesn't have an official release date.
