Boston Marathon canceled, changed to virtual experience

The Boston Marathon originally scheduled for April 20 that was postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic has been canceled and converted into a virtual experience.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), it's the first time in 124 years the Marathon won't run.

On Thursday, the Boston Athletic Association announced a series of virtual events related to the Marathon will occur throughout the second week of September.

The 5K associated with the marathon rescheduled for Sept. 12 was also canceled.

BAA CEO Tom Grilk said:

"Our top priority continues to be safeguarding the health of the community, as well as our staff, participants, volunteers, spectators, and supporters. While we cannot bring the world to Boston in September, we plan to bring Boston to the world for an historic 124th Boston Marathon."

Participants who prepared to run in April are offered a full refund and can also participate in the virtual alternative, which will occur around Sept. 7-14. As part of the virtual race, athletes will be able to print a finish line, winner's breaktape, and other items seen during a typical marathon.
