With the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine in the rearview mirror, the Kansas City Chiefs will begin hosting prospects on top-30 visits.
The first reported visit is scheduled to take place with a Leavenworth, Kansas native, who just so happens to fit a position of need for Kansas City. According to Bleacher Report's Ryan Fowler, the Chiefs are set to host Oregon State WR Anthony Gould on a top-30 visit.
What is a top-30 visit?
If you’re unfamiliar with top-30 visits, they’re pre-draft visits with 30 upcoming NFL draft prospects. Teams are allotted 30 visits (hence the top 30 moniker) and teams use those visits in a variety of different ways. If a player has a medical history, teams typically will bring those players in to do further background research. The same thing goes for off-field issues or character concerns. It's just another step in the information-gathering process.
The Chiefs tend to be varied in their usage of top-30 visits. It doesn't always indicate interest or that a player is going to be selected by the team in the draft. Often they'll bring in players who are expected to be priority free agents to impress upon them that this team is the right fit. At the same time, just last season they hosted a pair of their draft picks (Rashee Rice & BJ Thompson) on top-30 visits.
How does Oregon State WR Anthony Gould fit with the Chiefs?
Gould has been an explosive playmaker for the Beavers throughout the past three seasons, recording 84 receptions for over 1,300 yards and six receiving touchdowns. His size will probably relegate him to the slot or designed touches in the NFL, but he seems to make the most of his opportunities on offense.
His best asset in the NFL will be his ability as a punt return specialist, where he has proven to be crafty and elusive. In 26 career punt returns, he's averaged over 14 yards per return and scored two touchdowns. He put his skills as a return specialist on display during the East-West Shrine Bowl with a long punt return touchdown.
Drafting Gould on Day 3 or signing him as a priority free agent has Dave Toub's name all over it. The Chiefs have struggled to find consistent play at the punt returner position for several seasons now. A young and hungry rookie might turn out to be the answer for Kansas City.
Gould also has nearby ties with family in Leavenworth, Kansas.
"I've gone back and forth from fourth grade to really my sophomore year," Gould told reporters at the combine. "They've done a lot for me in that community. Especially the military part, you know, I've got to meet a lot of great people through that and through my mom."
