It’s sad and exciting at the same time. We are reaching the end of the College Football season. For SEC fans, there are just two regular season games remaining and the SEC Championship, which we now know will be LSU vs. Georgia. Before long, the College Football Playoff will be set, but a lot can happen in three weeks. Here’s how I see the conference shaking out before we are set for Bowl season.
Georgia heads to the CFP undefeated
The Bulldogs have a testy game this weekend against Kentucky, and arguably their biggest test of the season will take place in Atlanta versus Brian Kelly and LSU. But I don’t see this Georgia team slipping up. Outside of a hiccup early in the year against Mizzou, the Bulldogs have been far and away the best team in the country, and I see Kirby Smart having his boys ready to play by the time they line up against LSU in Atlanta. The story of the Tigers’ season has been spectacular. Nobody expected them to make it to this point, but this is the end of the line when it comes to their playoff hopes. The Bulldogs will lead by double digits at halftime, and they’ll never look back.
Texas A&M fires Jimbo Fisher
The situation in College Station seems to be getting worse every week, and while Jimbo Fisher’s nearly $90 million buyout complicates things, I see Texas A&M moving on after this season. The Aggies are an abysmal 3-7, with just one of those wins coming inside the conference. They legitimately might be the worst team in the SEC, which is incredible, considering they just had the #1 recruiting class in the country. Maybe Fisher’s buyout allows him for one more opportunity, but on and off the field, this program is a mess. And if there is any school that has the money to foot the bill and cut ties, it’s Texas A&M.
Tennessee makes the College Football Playoff
I’ve heard a lot of conversations about Tennessee not controlling their own destiny when it comes to the College Football Playoff. That is true, but in reality, they might be in the best position out of anyone not named Georgia. The only way Tennessee doesn’t get in is if TCU remains undefeated and LSU beats Georgia in the SEC Championship, which I’ve already described as a long shot. Then the committee would probably go with LSU because of their wins over Georgia and Alabama. Southern California has the potential to make things interesting as well. However, not only do I not think they will win out, but I also don’t think they will get in over Tennessee, even if they win the Pac-12. Tennessee’s resumé is incredibly impressive, and their only loss was on the road to the best team in the country. As long as the Vols take care of business against South Carolina and Vandy, they’ll be in the playoff.
Hendon Hooker wins the Heisman
A bonus one for Tennessee fans: I think the Heisman is Hendon Hooker’s to lose. From start to finish, he’s been the most dominant player in College Football. Coming off a brutal loss versus Georgia, his performance this past weekend against a solid Missouri defense was unbelievable. With South Carolina and Vandy the only two teams remaining on the Vols’ schedule, I like Hooker to rack up the necessary stats to secure the award.
