'The Match' becomes most-watched golf event in cable TV history

The pair of Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning defeated Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady in Sunday's "The Match: Champions for Charity" golf outing at Medalist Golf Club in Florida, but the foursome was a big winner among those watching at home.

Per Turner Sports PR, "The Match" became the most-viewed golf event in the history of cable television. It averaged 5.8 million viewers across the broadcast and topped-out at 6.3 million viewers from 5:45-6 pm ET.

According to Sports Media Watch, the previous cable TV record for a golf broadcast was the 2010 Masters on ESPN that peaked at 4.9 million viewers.

To compare, NASCAR's return to racing amid the coronavirus pandemic earlier this month drew 6.32 million viewers on Fox. Three debut episodes of the ESPN docuseries "The Last Dance" about Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls dynasty of the 1990s hit over 5.8 million viewers.

"The Match" aired across four Turner cable networks, and it raised $20 million in charitable funds to assist those directly affected by the pandemic:
