Patrick Mahomes has always had a connection to soccer due to his sports-oriented family. He got to know soccer more during college at Texas Tech, where he met his wife Brittany, who played soccer. Their shared athletic background has been an important part of Mahomes’ life.

So there has always been a connection. And when the biggest name in the world of soccer comes to town for a game, it’s hard to pass up on the opportunity of not meeting him.

On Saturday, April 13th, Sporting Kansas City welcomed Lionel Messi ‘s Inter Miami FC at Arrowhead Stadium, packed to the brim. More than 50,000 fans turned up to see some of the biggest names in sports.

SKC usually hosts its home games at Children’s Mercy Park, which holds around 18,500 fans. However, since it was Messi, they decided to change the venue. As a result, more fans will be able to see the game.

Before the kickoff, Messi was walking out of the tunnel with the Miami players. Mahomes was waiting right at the entrance to meet the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

Two greats of their respective sports exchanged handshakes and a hug.

Hey, good luck, man. Have fun out there! Patrick Mahomes said to Lionel Messi

Patrick Mahomes and his association with soccer

The 28-year-old never played the sport himself; he was more into baseball than football. His father, Pat Mahomes , played for the Texans Rangers, and New York Mets in Major League Baseball.

Patrick’s interest in soccer grew after meeting his wife, Brittany Mahomes. The 28-year-old mother of two played for the Texas Tyler Patriots during her college years.

Brittany later became part owner of the Kansas City-based Women’s National Soccer League team, Kansas City Current, in 2020. Since then, both she and Patrick have spent a lot of time, money, and effort developing the women’s game.

In March, the Current received a massive upgrade. The team relocated to the new 11,000-seat CPKC Stadium near the banks of the Missouri River. It cost around $120 million, which has the downtown skyline as its picturesque backdrop.

The three-time Super Bowl winner then made an even bigger announcement, which would be epic if he managed to pull it off. Both Patrick and Brittany promised that they would try their best to bring Taylor Swift to the stadium to watch a game.

Obviously, the responsibility of asking the pop icon would fall on Brittany because she and Swift have grown very close as friends since she began dating Chiefs tight Travis Kelce.
