Bryson DeChambeau says he made a 'mistake' in trashing driver

Bryson DeChambeau angered those associated with manufacturing company Cobra Golf on Thursday when the American heavy hitter criticized his driver following his opening round of the Open Championship.

While rival Brooks Koepka joked on Friday that he "loves" his driver, DeChambeau was left admitting that he used a poor choice of words.

"I made a mistake," DeChambeau told a group of reporters after he shot a second-round 70 to find himself trailing leader Louis Oosthuizen by 12 strokes heading into the weekend, per Bob Harig of ESPN. "I think as time goes on I'll look at this as a growing moment for me personally, and hopefully I can make the right things going on from here on out. I was in a heated situation, and I feel really bad about it."

DeChambeau complained on Thursday that his driver "sucks" and explained: "It's not a good face for me, and we're still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mishits. I'm living on the razor's edge, like I've told people for a long time."

Cobra tour operations manager Ben Schomin responded that DeChambeau's comments were "stupid" and added it's "rare" when the 27-year-old is happy.

"Everybody is bending over backwards," Schomin said. "We’ve got multiple guys in R&D who are CAD-ing (computer-aided design) this and CAD-ing that, trying to get this and that into the pipeline faster. (Bryson) knows it."
