To no one's surprise, Bryson DeChambeau was not happy after he finished his first day of The Open Championship one stroke over par and tied for 74th.
But when the press questioned him following the first round, the eight-time PGA Tour winner chose to take aim at his equipment — his Cobra driver to be exact. And Cobra was none too pleased.
"If I can hit it down the middle of the fairway, that's great, but with the driver right now, the driver sucks," he said after hitting the fairway just four out of 14 times at Royal St. George's on Thursday, per Bob Harig of ESPN. "It's not a good face for me, and we're still trying to figure out how to make it good on the mis-hits. I'm living on the razor's edge, like I've told people for a long time."
Those comments didn't sit well with Ben Schomin, who helps manufacture Cobra drivers to the golfer's liking and even served as DeChambeau's caddie at the Rocket Mortgage Classic after his long-time caddie abruptly bowed out.
"It's just really, really painful when he says something that stupid," Schomin told Golfweek on Thursday. "Everybody is bending over backwards. We’ve got multiple guys in R&D who are CAD-ing (computer-aided design) this and CAD-ing that, trying to get this and that into the pipeline faster. (Bryson) knows it."
Schomin added: "He has never really been happy, ever. Like, it’s very rare where he’s happy."
There is no immediate word on how this will affect DeChambeau's partnership with Cobra.
