London-based bettor wins $1.36M thanks to Harris English's putt

Winning over a million dollars thanks to a 35-1 long shot may sound like something out of a cheesy movie. But it's as real as it gets.

ESPN reported Tuesday that an unidentified London-based bettor won more than $1.36 million this week on a $15.50 bet that included a six-leg parlay and ended with golfer Harris English sinking the winning 16-foot birdie putt in the Travelers Championship in Connecticut last weekend.

"I thought I was going to have a heart attack when the winning putt went in. I couldn't believe it," the bettor told Betfair, the UK-based betting exchange and sportsbook.

The parlay included Euro 2020 wins for Croatia (over Scotland) and England (over the Czech Republic,), as well as an LGPA victory for Nelly Korda (KPMG Women's PGA Championship) and PGA tournament wins for Steve Stricker (Bridgestone Senior Classic) and finally English.

"I was sure that Hovland, Korda, and Steve Stricker were good bets," the bettor said. "But I was a little unsure on Harris English."

According to Betfair, the first five legs of the parlay had already hit when English sank an 18th-hole putt to send him to a playoff round against Kramer Hickok. After eight grueling holes -- the longest PGA playoff round in nearly a decade -- the American golfer emerged victorious -- and gave one very happy bettor a reason to celebrate.

"I thought (English) had lost it after some wayward tee shots on the 18th hole," the bettor told Betfair. "When he won the playoff, I was very relieved."
