Phil Mickelson misses cut at U.S. Open

With his recent joining in the controversial LIV Golf Series , six-time Major champion Phil Mickelson's future at the U.S. Open — among other PGA Tour events — is unclear. While he was still able to compete at this year's event, the performance was one to forget for "Lefty."

Despite earning six majors over the years, Mickelson remains one U.S. Open crown away from a career Grand Slam. He has won three Masters, two PGA Championships and one Open Championship.

Though he improved from Thursday's 8-over-78 to Friday's 3-over-73, Mickelson dug himself a hole he couldn't get out of. The recently turned 52-year-old was tied for 143rd among 156 players when he finished his round on Friday.

"I enjoyed the week. I just wished I'd played better," Mickelson said, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach. "It was spectacular to come back to such a historic course, and I thought the setup was remarkable and just really showcased what a special place this was."

Mickelson plans to play in the first LIV Golf event in the U.S., set for June 30 to July 2 at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland, Ore. The league is funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and has drawn criticism from hosts of PGA Tour members.

According to Schlabach, Mickelson received a "warm" reception from spectators at this week's major.

"The fans here have always been terrific, and they really support all sports," Mickelson said. "I love it when we bring golf here because they really create a special atmosphere."
