Superstar NFL, NBA duos to square off at 'Capital One's The Match'

Two championship duos will play for bragging rights when Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson square off against Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce during "Capital One's The Match."

Curry and Thompson have led Golden State to four NBA titles, most recently in 2022. Mahomes and Kelce won their second Super Bowl this past February and have led the Chiefs to five consecutive appearances in the AFC Championship Game.

"The Match" began in 2018 with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson competing against each other. Two years later, the two golfers returned and brought NFL greats Tom Brady and Peyton Manning with them.

This is the second appearance at the event for Curry and Mahomes. Curry paired with Manning in Nov. 2020 and lost to Mickelson and Charles Barkley. Mahomes appeared last year alongside Josh Allen, losing to Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers.

This time, both will be paired with their championship-winning teammates.

Curry, Kelce and Mahomes played at the American Century Championship golf tournament the past three seasons, with Curry having the most success of the three. He finished fourth in the event in 2020, ninth in 2021 and 16th in 2022. Mahomes' best finish was a tie at 38th in 2021 while Kelce never finished higher than 58th.

Mahomes should feel optimistic about Kelce's first appearance at "The Match," however. He looked like he was in prime form at an invitational in April, on and off the course.

Curry, on the other hand, might want Thompson to get a few more rounds of golf in before the exhibition.

"I wish (my golf swing) was as consistent as my jumper," Thompson told NBC Sports in 2016. From the look of it, training with Marshawn Lynch probably didn't help.

TNT will air "The Match" live from Las Vegas on June 29 at 6:30 PM EST.
