World No. 2 Cameron Smith among latest group to join LIV Golf

Last week, as he was preparing to compete in the Tour Championship as a part of the FedEx Cup playoffs, World No. 2 Cameron Smith remained coy regarding the topic of his possible defect to the LIV Golf Series. 

On Tuesday morning, the highly-rumored shift to the controversial breakaway league became official for Smith, as well as a group of other PGA Tour pros.

In addition to Smith, the circuit led by Greg Norman and backed by the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia announced that Joaquin Niemann, Marc Leishman, Harold Varner III, Cameron Tringale and Anirban Lahiri would be joining the venture. According to Golfweek's Adam Woodard, this now gives LIV Golf six of the top 30 players on the Official World Golf Ranking (as of Aug. 21).

The league's next event will be the LIV Golf Invitational Boston from Friday to Sunday.

The 29-year-old Smith has six career wins on the PGA Tour, including the 150th Open Championship in July.
