MLB Pipeline updated its top 100 prospects list on Thursday, and three members of the Chicago White Sox organization made the cut — Colson Montgomery, Noah Schultz, and Edgar Quero.
Colson Montgomery
The White Sox' top prospect is no stranger to the MLB Pipeline top 100 list. Montgomery entered the 2023 campaign as the publication's No. 38 prospect. And despite oblique and back injuries delaying his start to his season, he jumped up to No. 17 on the updated top 100 list.
Now healthy and playing regularly, Montgomery is putting together a solid season. The 2021 first-round pick has a .308/.512/.517 slash line with five home runs, eight doubles, one triple, and 21 RBIs in 36 games across three minor-league levels this season. Montgomery has shown adequate plate discipline as well, drawing 41 walks against 30 strikeouts.
After tearing up High-A ball, the 6-foot-3 shortstop recently received a promotion to Double-A Birmingham. Montgomery has struggled a bit with a .179 batting average for the Barons, but a nine-game sample size isn't cause for concern just yet.
Noah Schultz
The White Sox selected a local prep arm with their first-round pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, and it's looking like a nice pickup so far. Schultz broke into MLB Pipleline's updated top 100 list with a No. 66 ranking.
The towering left-hander has dominated through nine starts for Low-A Kannapolis. Schultz owns a 1.52 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, and 33 strikeouts against just four walks through 23.2 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .167 against the Oswego East product.
There's still a long road ahead as MLB Pipeline projects him to reach the big leagues in 2026, but Schultz could be a top-of-the-rotation arm should he reach his full potential.
Edgar Quero
Quero is a newcomer to the White Sox system after being acquired in a trade that sent Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez to the Los Angeles Angels. The 20-year-old backstop actually dropped from a preseason No. 65 ranking to No. 87 on MLB Pipeline's updated top 100 list. Nevertheless, he represents the Sox' best option behind the plate in the coming years.
Since joining Double-A Birmingham, Quero is slashing .325/.370/.400 with three doubles and 11 RBIs in 10 games. For the season, he owns a .257/.384/.341 slash line with three home runs, 16 doubles, and 46 RBIs through 80 games.
Prior to the trade deadline, the White Sox had major question marks at the catcher position. Adding Quero and Korey Lee to the mix immediately addressed that issue, as the latter figures to see time behind the dish at 35th/Shields next year while the former continues his development. MLB Pipeline projects Quero to reach the big leagues in 2025.
