Former NASCAR champion expected to retire at end of 2024

It seems that Martin Truex Jr.'s time in the NASCAR Cup Series is coming to an end.

According to Jordan Bianchi of The Athletic, the 2017 NASCAR Cup Series champion is expected to officially announce his retirement on Friday, leaving a coveted seat at Joe Gibbs Racing open for the taking.

Along with the 2017 championship, Truex boasts 34 career NASCAR Cup Series wins, including victories in crown jewels such as the Coca-Cola 600 and Southern 500.

After winning just twice through his first nine seasons in the Cup Series, he had his breakout year in 2015, when he won at Pocono and made the Championship 4.

In the eight-and-a-half seasons since 2015, Truex has won 31 races, made the NASCAR playoffs seven times and made NASCAR's Championship Race four times.

So far in 2024, Truex is set to make the playoffs for the ninth time in 10 seasons, currently sitting 128 points above the playoff cutline with 10 regular-season races remaining.

Truex seriously considered retirement in both 2022 and 2023 before deciding to return to Joe Gibbs Racing both times. This year, his decision comes considerably earlier than it had in years past, giving Joe Gibbs more time to mull over potential replacement options for Truex.

One such option could be current Stewart-Haas Racing driver Chase Briscoe, who, according to Fox Sports' Bob Pockrass, is the top candidate to replace Truex at JGR, given Stewart-Haas' closure at the end of 2024. Briscoe is the only driver of the four in Stewart-Haas' current lineup that has won a race at the Cup Series level.

A decision on Truex's replacement would likely come late in the season or during the offseason, but JGR isn't likely to settle for any driver it doesn't see as the best option.
