Ace Max Scherzer rejoins Mets amid rehab from oblique strain

It was learned last Thursday that New York Mets ace Max Scherzer started throwing bullpen sessions at low intensity as he works to return from the oblique strain that has kept him out of action for roughly one month. 

Scherzer has taken yet another necessary step in his recovery. 

Per Danny Abriano of SNY, Erica, Scherzer's wife, confirmed via Instagram that the three-time Cy Young Award winner and his family have journeyed from Florida to New York so the 37-year-old could rejoin the Mets to continue his rehabilitation ahead of the team's home series versus the Milwaukee Brewers that gets underway on Tuesday. 

Back on May 19, the Mets announced that Scherzer could be sidelined for anywhere from six to eight weeks. However, Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated reported last week that Scherzer "appears to be ahead of schedule" and may face live batters this week en route to earning a rehab assignment. 

"He’s doing great," Mets manager Buck Showalter said about Scherzer ahead of this past weekend. "I’m not going to get into 'ahead, behind schedule' but he’s where he needs to be. He’s in the competitive mix in the future. Obviously, that goes without saying, but the thing with Max is you’ve just got to try to slow him down sometimes. But he’s feeling good."

Scherzer went 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in his first eight starts this season before his injury. 

The Mets began Tuesday at 40-22 on the campaign and hold a five-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
