Major League Baseball is likely nearing the end of its investigation into allegations that the Boston Red Sox illegally stole signs during their World Series season in 2018, and you can count Andrew Benintendi among the players who are confident the findings will be nothing like what we saw with the Houston Astros.
Benintendi was asked about MLB’s ongoing investigation on Thursday, and he said he doesn’t expect any surprises when it is complete. The outfielder said Red Sox players “know we didn’t do anything.”
It would stand to reason that the Red Sox would have a decent idea by now if MLB uncovered anything they should be worried about. The easiest way for players to make themselves look bad is to be caught in a blatant lie, and slugger JD Martinez also said recently that he is confident the investigation will exonerate the Red Sox. General manager Chaim Bloom, who was not with the team in 2018, told WEEI’s “Greg Hill Morning Show” on Thursday that has no reason to believe MLB will uncover any evidence of cheating.
“What I will say is I don’t have any reason to think anything went on,” Bloom said. “Again, I’m careful what I say because I do want to respect the investigation. We have to respect it.”
A recent report claimed whatever the Red Sox were doing was not as bad as the elaborate sign-stealing that went on in Houston. Boston has been accused of illegally using the video replay room to help steal signs, but you would have to think the confidence radiating from Red Sox players means something — especially when you consider how bad the Astros have made themselves look.
Former Astros manager AJ Hinch made some extremely arrogant remarks when the New York Yankees accused his team of cheating during the playoffs last year, but that was before he knew Houston would be investigated. Benintendi and others know MLB is digging to find whatever it can, yet they still seem confident nothing will come of the investigation.
