Angels' Mike Trout exits with groin tightness after homer, double against Red Sox

Los Angeles Angels star center fielder Mike Trout appeared to be getting back on track with a home run and a double in his first two at-bats against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, but his night ended early due to groin tightness.

Trout, 30, was struggling through the worst stretch of his career with zero hits over a seven-game stretch before finally hitting a single against the Red Sox on Monday. Earlier on Tuesday, the Angels fired Joe Maddon as manager amid a 12-game losing streak. In the first game with Phil Nevin as interim manager, Trout hit a home run to dead centerfield in the first inning.

In his second at-bat, Trout roped a line drive to the wall in right center but pulled up as he rounded first base and slowly jogged into second. He was then escorted off the field by medical staff and replaced on second base by pinch runner Jo Adell.

Last season, Trout missed 126 games after landing on the 10-day injured list in May with what was originally called a calf strain, but was later revealed to be a torn muscle that ended his year.

The three-time AL MVP began the 2022 season with a .329 batting average and 12 home runs in his first 39 games before his slump began with four strikeouts against the Texas Rangers on May 25.
