Angels pitcher taken to hospital after being hit by infield throw

A crazy and scary play unfolded at Citi Field on Saturday night when Los Angeles Angels rookie pitcher Chase Silseth was hit in the back of the head by a throw from first baseman Trey Cabbage.

The play happened in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Mets attempted a double steal off of Silseth.

But confusion on the base paths for the Mets resulted in confusion for the Angels, as catcher Logan O'Hoppe inexplicably threw the ball the first base, prompted Francisco Lindor to make a break for third base.

It was then that Cabbage's threw hit Silseth in the back of the hand and bounced toward the third base dugout.

Silseth took a few steps and then stumbled to the ground.

Have a look.

The Angels said Silseth was taken to a local hospital for tests and observation, but the good news is that he was alert and even cracking jokes about the play.

It is always scary when a player gets hit in the head and then falls to the ground after taking a couple of steps, so the precaution and desire to get tests done is understandable. Silseth pitched 3.1 innings and allowed two earned runs while striking out three batters before exiting in the Angels' 5-3 win over the Mets.

It has been a terrible week of injury news for the Angels, as it was earlier revealed superstar two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani has a tear in his UCL and will not pitch again this season. He might need a second Tommy John surgery. As if that was not enough, superstar outfielder Mike Trout ended up back on the Injured list.

It all continues what has been a brutal stretch for the Angels after the trade deadline, one where they not only retained Ohtani despite his status as a pending free agent but also attempted to be buyers in an effort to get Ohtani to the playoffs for the first time in his career.
