Angels rookie returns to Yankee Stadium five years after famous throw from stands

It's not quite the same as little leaguer Henry Rowengartner from the 1993 film "Rookie of the Year ," but Los Angeles Angels rookie Logan O'Hoppe will return to Yankee Stadium this week, five years after going viral for his long toss from the second deck in the Bronx back onto the field during a game between the Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.

After O'Hoppe caught a first-inning home run from then-Orioles star Manny Machado (now with the Padres) in the left field stands, the West Islip, N.Y. native hurled the baseball back onto the diamond (as is tradition with opposing teams' dingers) and nearly made it all the way to the infield dirt. Already a star baseball player at St. John the Baptist High School, O'Hoppe was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 23rd round of the MLB June Amateur Draft two months later.

Now as the starting catcher with the Angels, O'Hoppe is slated to return to Yankee Stadium for a regular-season game for the first time since the famous throw as a teenager. O'Hoppe played in a July 2020 exhibition game at the legendary ballpark while he was still with the Phillies organization.

O'Hoppe was sent from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in August 2022 at the trade deadline and made his big league debut in September. He's shown promising power through his first 12 games this season, recording four home runs and 11 RBI over 41 at-bats.

The Angels open their three-game set at Yankee Stadium at 7:05 p.m. ET on Tuesday.
