Blue Jays make big decision on 2022 All-Star pitcher after brutal outing

The Toronto Blue Jays have seen enough of Alek Manoah, for now, after the righty's implosion on the mound during the team's 11-4 loss to the Houston Astros on Monday.

Manoah has only two quality starts in 13 outings this season, both of which came in his first five games. Those two starts are the only ones all spring where Manoah has pitched past the sixth inning, and his latest clunker against Houston was his worst performance of the year.

The 25-year-old faced nine batters on Monday and allowed six runs on seven hits, including a grand slam while walking one and retiring just one hitter.

Manoah has a stunning -1.2 WAR (wins above replacement) and an equally shocking 1-7 record while posting an abysmal 6.36 ERA and 1.89 WHIP. Manoah is getting hit hard (11 home runs) and has been wild too (five hit batsmen, three wild pitches, league-high 42 walks).

The 2019 11th overall pick burst on the scene in 2021, finishing eighth in the AL Rookie of the Year voting after going 9-2 with a 3.22 ERA and 1.04 WHIP across 20 starts. Manoah was even better last year in his All-Star campaign, going 16-7 with a 2.24 ERA and 0.99 WHIP in 196 2/3 innings pitched covering 31 starts.

While his stuff can be elite, the 2022 AL Cy Young third-place finisher has also shown to have control issues in his young career. Despite throwing just 111 2/3 innings as a rookie, Manoah led the AL in hit batsmen with 16 and had the most hit batters in the junior circuit in 2022 as well with 15.
