The Boston Red Sox are in the third game of their four-game series against the Cleveland Guardians. They currently lead 2-0 after dropping the first two games of the series. They lost Monday 6-0 then on Tuesday 10-7 in 11 innings. Tonight Tanner Houck rebounded well from his last outing as he shut down the Guardians lineup throwing a complete game shutout and giving up three hits; he didn’t allow a walk and struck out nine. Last night Garrett Whitlock left his start after four innings. He gave up two runs in three hits; he walked one and struck out one. Today he was placed on the ten day injured list as it was deemed he has an injury to his oblique. They called up Joe Jacques to replace Whitlock. It remains who will make the start in place of Whitlock in the third game of their upcoming series against the Pirates.

Red Sox Moves By The Numbers

RHP – Garrett Whitlock

The conversation has been if Whitlock should be a starter or a reliever and to this point if the season he looks like he can be starter. This injury isn’t an arm injury so that’s a plus for the Red Sox. To this point, he has made four starts and he is 1-0 with a 1.96 ERA, a 3.41 FIP, a 1.15 WHIP, and 17 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. He is currently in his fourth season with the Red Sox and he has made 103 appearances with 23 coming as starts, he is 18-11 with a 3.39 ERA, a 3.46 FIP, a 1.14 WHIP, and 252 strikeouts in 241.2 innings.

LHP – Joe Jacques

Jacques was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox on December 7, 2022, he appeared last season in 23 games with one coming as a spot start going 2-1 with a 5.06 ERA, a 4.53 FIP, a 1.57 WHIP, and 20 strikeouts in 26.2 innings. This spring he appeared in six games going 0-1 with an 8.44 ERA, a 3.00 WHIP, and five strikeouts in 5.1 innings. With Worcester this season he’s made four appearances going 0-1 with a 15.75 ERA, a 3.50 WHIP, and seven strikeouts in four innings.
