Braves place Max Fried on injured list due to back spasms

On Tuesday, the Atlanta Braves announced that ace southpaw Max Fried was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Sunday with a left-side muscle spasm in his lumbar spine.

In corresponding roster moves, utility man Charlie Culberson was designated for assignment, righty Kyle Wright was recalled to the main roster and right-handed reliever Jacob Webb was activated from the 45-day injured list.

Fried, 26, has been sensational for the Braves this summer, as he compiled a 6-0 record with a 1.98 ERA and 47 strikeouts in 50 innings of work. As Mark Bowman wrote for the club's official website, though, Fried's velocity was down against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. He surrendered three earned runs across five innings and didn't earn a decision.

"Sometimes you just don't feel physically your best and it's just at that point you might not have it that day," Fried said after the outing, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

"I just want to be able to go out there and try to compete, throw some good pitches, try to get some outs, let the defense work."

The Braves are hopeful Fried will be available to pitch on Sept. 16 versus the Baltimore Orioles.
