Braves right-hander Mike Soroka re-tears Achilles, will undergo season-ending surgery
The Atlanta Braves suffered a huge blow to their rotation on Saturday as it was announced right-hander Mike Soroka will miss the remainder of the 2021 season after re-tearing the Achilles tendon in his right leg.
Soroka re-tore his surgically repaired right Achilles tendon while walking to the clubhouse at Truist Park on Thursday. An MRI revealed a complete re-tear of the tendon.
Soroka was continuing to rehab from the surgical procedure performed after he initially tore his tendon on Aug. 3. It's unclear when he'll undergo his next surgery.
The 23-year-old has appeared in just 37 games since making his major league debut in 2018. He was aiming to return to Atlanta's rotation at some point this season.
Soroka's best season came in 2019 when he earned an All-Star selection and finished sixth in Cy Young voting. He went 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA, 1.111 WHIP and 142 strikeouts in 174.2 innings.
In total, Soroka is 15-6 with a 2.86 ERA, 1.164 WHIP and 171 strikeouts in 14 innings.
The Braves have primarily relied on Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Drew Smyly and Charlie Morton on the mound this season.
