Brewers designate RHP Dinelson Lamet for assignment

The Milwaukee Brewers designated right-hander Dinelson Lamet for assignment on Wednesday.

The move comes just days after the Brewers acquired Lamet from the San Diego Padres as part of a trade package for All-Star closer Josh Hader

Even though the 30-year-old struggled in 13 appearances for the Padres this season, Lamet was expected to join the Brewers' rotation as a low-risk, high-reward addition.

According to MLB.com's Adam McCalvy, there are several reasons why the Brewers would choose to let Lamet walk away.

For one, the Brewers acquired Matt Bush in a trade with the Texas Rangers earlier this week, leaving Lamet as the odd man out due to the 13-pitcher limit.

McCalvy added that Lamet recently surpassed five years of major league service, so he can't be optioned to the minor leagues without his consent.

"Dinelson has a good arm and was included in the trade to help balance out the deal," Brewers president of baseball operations David Stearns told the media and McCalvy. "As subsequent transactions played out, the roster fit became a little tougher. We are hopeful we will be able to keep him in our system."

Milwaukee has seven days to place Lamet on outright waivers. If Lamet clears waivers, the Brewers are responsible for his 2022 salary of $1.7 million, whether he accepts a minor league assignment or not.

Lamet went 0-1 with a 9.49 ERA over just 12.1 innings pitched for the Padres this season.
