Memorial day has come and gone and the calendar has officially switched from May to June. At this point, approximately two months of baseball has been played across the board. At the big league level, the Milwaukee Brewers are off to their best start in franchise history. In the minor leagues, all affilates have a winning record.
It is great to see all levels having success, especially because the Brewers farm system is consistently rated near the bottom. With this success comes emerging stories. Here we will look at a few players who stood out during the month of May.
Nashville Sounds – INF Pablo Reyes
Reyes, who is currently on the Brewers 40-man roster and saw big league playing time last season, had a monster month of May. Over 18 games he hit for a .304 batting average and .913 OPS. He was tied for the most RBI’s during the month with 15 and hit four home runs. Impressively, he struck out in just six of his 69 at bats. It was good to see him have a good month for he struggled mightly in April.
Biloxi Shuckers – OF Joey Wiemer
The Brewers second ranked prospect is continuing to put up video game like numbers. After a strong April, Wiemer found his power stroke in May as he collected 17 extra base hits. Nine of these hits went for home runs and the remaining eight were doubles. On the year he now has 12 home runs, 34 RBI, and a .952 OPS. It seems likely that he will get promoted to Nashville at some point this season.
Biloxi Shuckers – P Harold Chirino
Chirino, a 24 year old right handed reliever, is having his most successful professional season of his career. In 22.2 IP he has a 1.19 ERA and a 0.93 WHIP. During the month of May, he pitched 13 innings in eight appearencess and allowed just two earned runs. Hopefully he can continue to pitch well as the season progresses.
Wisconsin Timber Rattlers – P Antoine Kelly
Kelly was once a top prospect in the Brewers organization. Unfortunately a diagnosis of thoracic outlet syndrome and subsequent surgery lowered his stock. This year, he is healthy and is striking a lot of batters out. In May he struck out 37 during his 27.1 innings of work.
Carolina Mudcats – OF Jackson Chourio
Chourio, an 18 year old whom the Brewers signed during the international signing period in January 2021, had an insanely great month of May. He led the Mudcats in hits (32) and doubles (11). His slash line for the month was .352/.406/.505/.911. The organization’s ninth ranked prospect has plenty of growth left in him, but so far everywhere he has gone he has hit extremely well.
