In mid-April, Milwaukee Brewers reliever Gus Varland was hit in the hand by a baseball on a comebacker. He avoided a major injury but was still placed on the injured list. He now is gearing up to return to the Brew Crew, and as a part of his rehab process, he will appear in two games for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers.

Varland is slated to appear in games on Thursday, April 27 and Saturday April 29. The goal is that he will then join the Brewers for their next road trip that begins on Tuesday, May 2 in Colorado.

Where will reliever Gus Varland fit in on the Milwaukee Brewers once he returns?

Prior to the injury, Varland was still working on carving out a role in the bullpen. He has appeared in six games with the Brewers and has one hold. With Matt Bush on the injured list, opportunities for more holds and high-leverage appearances may be available.

It’s unclear how Craig Counsell will use Varland, but he is a Rule 5 draft selection and has to remain on the active roster all season. Aside from injury, if the Brewers want to remove him from the 26-man roster, he will have to be offered back to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Hopefully this promising player can have success with Milwaukee while in the big leagues.
