Caleb Smith, Lance Lynn ejected Wednesday amid foreign substance checks

Two major league pitchers were tossed from games on Wednesday during checks for foreign substances.

In Chicago, White Sox pitcher Lance Lynn was ejected after he tossed his equipment at an umpire between innings. Lynn had left his hat and glove on the dugout railing for third-base ump Nic Lentz to inspect but forgot about removing his belt. After removing it and tossing it up to the railing, Lentz ejected him from the game.

"He was late getting over, so I left my glove and my hat, and then while I was going down in the dugout, trying to see the trainers because I'm dealing with something, he yells at me that he needs to see my belt," Lynn said postgame. "So I toss it up and then he throws me out."

Later in the evening, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Caleb Smith was accused of having a sticky substance on his glove and ejected from the game. Smith's glove was confiscated in the process, and he had to be held back from confronting the umpires.

Major League Baseball began cracking down on the use of foreign substances a couple of months into the 2021 season.
