The Cincinnati Reds have named their starting pitchers for the first five games of spring training.
Per Mark Sheldon of MLB.com, here's who will get the ball to open Cactus League play:
Reds probable starting pitchers for Cactus League games...
Sat at CLE: Spiers
Sun vs. LAA: Greene
Mon (ss) vs. SEA: Abbott
Mon (ss) at MIL: Martinez
Tues at CHC: Montas
Carson Spiers is a 26-year-old member of the Reds' 40-man roster who has appeared in four games at the major league level. He went 0-1 in 2023 with a 6.92 ERA in those four appearances. He also had one save.
As for Greene, he's one of the building blocks of the Reds organization. The 24-year-old is 9-20 lifetime with a 4.62 ERA but owns a triple-digit fastball and could take a big leap forward in 2024.
Abbott made his major league debut last year and is also currently 24-years-old. He went 8-6 across 21 starts and owns a 3.87 ERA. He figures to be a fixture in the rotation.
The veteran Nick Martinez signed with the Reds this offseason after spending last year with the San Diego Padres. He is a candidate for the rotation but could also land in the bullpen.
Finally, Montas signed a one-year deal with the Reds this offseason after making just one appearance for the New York Yankees a season ago. He's a bounceback candidate who also will have a rotation spot locked up.
Cincinnati went 82-80 last season and will be a trendy pick to make the playoffs this year.
