Originally signed on a minor-league deal, LHP Richard Lovelady was designated for assignment earlier this week by the Chicago Cubs. That said, rather than losing him for nothing, the Cubs flipped the lefty to the Tampa Bay Rays for LHP Jeff Belge.

Lovelady had an underwhelming performance in his time with the Cubs. In seven appearances, Lovelady worked 5.2 innings to the tune of a 7.94 ERA. Unfortunately, the lefty flier didn’t quite pan out in his time with Chicago. The 28-year-old gets a new opportunity with the Rays.

In return, Belge joins the Cubs organization. The career minor-leaguer was originally a Los Angeles Dodgers draft pick, ending up with the Rays for the last two seasons

In 11 appearances this season, Belge owns a 4.20 ERA. The lefty has spent the last two seasons in Double-A.

According to Belge’s scouting report, the lefty compliments his fastball with a hard 12-6 curveball and a slider.

Lovelady was originally DFA’d by the Cubs when Tyson Miller was added to the roster.
