The Detroit Tigers have been active today after announcing their six non-roster players who received invites to Spring Training they announced that tonight they have traded Nick Maton to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations. This is the Tigers second trade to the Orioles for cash considerations in the last few weeks with the last one being Tyler Nevin. Maton had been designated for assignment just last week and the Tigers were able to find someone to take a trade for him. It just didn’t work out in Detroit and the trade now opens options for the Tigers with either Zach McKinstry, Matt Vierling, or even Colt Keith if Jace Jung has an impressive camp and can have a solid camp and bump Keith to third. Another option could also be Justyn-Henry Mallory who although has been getting work in the outfield could also play third base.

Nick Maton By The Numbers

Maton was acquired last season as part of the Gregory Soto trade with the Philadelphia Phillies. He played 93 games last season and slashed .173/.288/.305 with a .593 OPS; he had nine doubles, eight home runs, 32 RBI, 29 runs scored, one stolen base, and 38 walks. For his career he has played in 179 games and slashed .208/.306/.361 with a .666 OPS; he has 18 doubles, two triples, 15 home runs, 63 RBI, 58 runs scored, three stolen bases, and 58 walks over three seasons between the Phillies and Tigers.

Bottom Line:

The 2024 season is an exciting season for the Tigers as they have a real chance to win the American League Central all while having their young talent coming up.
