Team USA announced its coaching staff for the 2023 World Baseball Classic, led by first-year manager Mark DeRosa. Joining him are bench coach Jerry Manuel, pitching coach Andy Pettitte, hitting coach Ken Griffey Jr., first base coach Lou Collier, third base coach Dino Ebel and bullpen coach Dave Righetti.

Manuel’s coaching career includes stops with the Chicago White Sox, Montréal Expos, Florida Marlins and New York Mets. He won a World Series with the Marlins in 1997 and was named the 2000 American League Manager of the Year after leading Chicago to the AL Central title.

Pettitte is making his professional coaching debut after an 18-year career that included five World Series championships with the New York Yankees and three All-Star Game appearances.

Griffey also is making his professional coaching debut after a 22-year career with the Seattle Mariners, Cincinnati Reds and White Sox, where he was a 13-time All-Star, 10-time Gold Glove Award winner seven-time Silver Slugger and the 1997 AL MVP.

Griffey is a first-ballot Hall of Famer and a member of the MLB All-Century Team, and was part of Team USA’s inaugural World Baseball Classic team in 2006.

Collier, a scout with the Kansas City Royals, enjoyed an eight-year MLB career that included stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Milwaukee Brewers, Expos, Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies.

Ebel will hold the same position with Team USA in the 2023 World Baseball Classic as he currently does for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since returning to the Dodgers organization in 2019, he has been on a coaching staff that helped the team win two National League West titles and the 2020 World Series title.

Righetti rounds out the Team USA coaching staff, who achieved incredible success as a player and coach in the Majors. He was the AL Rookie of the Year in 1981 and threw a no-hitter with the Yankees two years later.

Righetti also served as the San Francisco Giants pitching coach for 18 seasons and helped lead them to the 2002 NL pennant, and World Series titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014.

Mookie Betts joining Dino Ebel at WBC

The Dodgers will also be represented at the 2023 WBC by Mookie Betts, who was a recent addition to the Team USA roster. It marks the first time in Betts’ career he’s participated in the event.

Freddie Freeman has committed to playing for Team Canada.
