After multiple seasons of rumored interest, the Chicago Cubs finally added first baseman Dominic Smith to the organization. With seven seasons under his belt split between the New York Mets and Washington Nationals, Smith brings plenty of experience to Cubs Spring Training.

During the 2023 season, the veteran primarily played first base, logging 153 games at the position for the rebuilding Nationals. His offensive production wasn't special, but that didn't change what appeared to be an unwavering interest by the Cubs.

Smith signed a minor-league deal with a non-roster invite to Cubs Spring Training in February. As a career first baseman, it'd make sense for him to spend time at the position if he were to make the club out of camp. It also seems possible that he could see time in the outfield due to his experience there during his time with the Mets.

As things currently stand, Smith has a solid chance to make the Cubs Opening Day roster. Through 20 plate appearances during Cactus League action, he's definitely seeing the baseball well. A 1.029 OPS should bode well when the Cubs' brain trust evaluates roster options at the end of camp.

It won't be an easy decision as Smith faces competition with fellow non-roster invitees such as Garrett Cooper and David Peralta. Each player brings veteran experience and good Spring Training stats to boot.

But versatility and handedness could play in Smith's favor as he swings from the left side. The Cubs' projected lineup is primarily a right-handed hitting bunch. Another left-hander could bolster Craig Counsell's bench options.

Regardless of what happens, Smith has shown that he has the potential to contribute. Getting production from the 28-year-old would come in handy for a Cubs team that's pushing forward to capture its first NL Central title and playoff appearance since the 2020 COVID-shortened season.
