It's been a frustrating year for SF Giants fans, and that extends to Giants fans who used to play for the team. Sunday's loss was especially bad, with Arizona winning on a walk-off. Only two Giants got hits, and Logan Webb pitched seven masterful innings only to get Cain'd.
Former Giant Michael Morse reacted to the loss with a pitch for some sweeping organizational changes.
Buster Posey is a logical choice for general manager, as one of the smartest and most respected Giants in recent memory. Madison Bumgarner might not be ready to hang up his spikes, but Morse thinks he should manage the team. We'd expect a lot of fiery arguments with the umpires, but on the plus side, he can ride dirt bikes as much as he wants.
Matt Cain would be a great pitching coach with his calm demeanor, knowledge of pitching, and ability to empathize with starters who receive no run support. Travis Ishikawa is currently the hitting coach for the single-A San Jose Giants, so he has the necessary experience to teach players to crush walk off bombs in the playoffs.
Vogelsong lives in Georgia , but he's neighbors with former Giants teammates Javier Lopez, Mark DeRosa, and Jeff Francoeur. Javy Lopez probably keeps Vogey updated on the team.
What role does Morse see for himself? Clubhouse assistant. Not even clubhouse manager - maybe he didn't want to step on Mike Murphy's toes, or current senior clubhouse manager Brad Grems.
Morse had some memorable hits with the Giants, including a pinch-hit grand slam that set up Ishikawa's game-winner in 2014.
He also knocked in what proved to be the winning run in Game 7 of the World Series that year, one of his two RBIs in the 3-2 win.
But it's the time Morse hit a grand slam that had to be confirmed by replay that shows he has the humility to be a clubhouse assistant. Without complaint, Morse ran the bases backwards and even took a phantom swing to officially complete his home run.
The Giants are 17-23, still just three games out of the wild card. But if things go south, it's nice to know that at least one member of the 2014 Giants is ready to step up and keep the Gatorade cooler full.
