The hiring of Ron Washington brought in a new voice to the Los Angeles Angels, one that has been around winning teams during his time with the Atlanta Braves, and also bringing in a solid supporting cast in his coaches.

It’s rumored that Chili Davis, Eric Young Sr., and Clint Hurdle will be accompanying Washington in their respective coaching roles, but so will Ryan Goins. He plans to join the staff as the Angels infield coach, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Goins last played in Major League Baseball during the 2020 season with the Chicago White Sox, but has since bounced around in various big league minor league systems. One connection to Washington was during his short stint with the Braves in August 2022, which lasted just about a week.

With his new opportunity with the Angels, Zach Neto, Nolan Schanuel, Luis Rengifo, Michael Stefanic, among others, are who Goins will work with in 2024.

Goins recently announced his retirement from MLB, and this stands to be his first shot at coaching in the Major Leagues.

What can Ryan Goins bring to Angels?

With his solid tenure in MLB, Goins had the opportunity in his eight-year playing career to playing alongside, and under, several elite defensive players.

During his time with the Blue Jays, and later the Royals, he graded out exceptionally well as a second baseman. Goins logged 555 games in MLB, primarily coming up the middle.

His highest workload came in 2017, when he logged 670.1 innings at shortstop. Goins has the makings of a solid piece to a coaching staff, and at 35 years old, he’s got a lot to relate to a youthful group currently with the Angels.
