With the trade deadline coming, expect the Braves to trim the fat off the roster, and some of that has already begun this week. A few days ago, Forrest Wall was designated for assignment, and today, Zack Short joined him. We’ll see if anybody has interest in picking up Short or if he will remain in Gwinnett, but we do know now that Forrest Wall will not. He was picked up by the Marlins earlier today.
Wall has had an admirable professional baseball career. He was drafted in the 35th round of the 2014 draft out of high school and spent nearly a decade in the minors before finally making his MLB debut with the Braves last year. He’s best known for his speed and defense in the outfield, but he did have a little success with the stick in 2023, and there were some flashes this season as well.
However, the fact that he couldn’t stick with the Braves, a team that is desperate for outfield help, is pretty telling. Wall is the typical AAAA player, a guy who is good enough to take over at the AAA level but has not quite proven himself in the majors. Perhaps that changes in Miami. He should surely get some opportunities with an organization that is headed toward a lengthy rebuild.
