George Springer: Blue Jays 'built to win for a long time'
George Springer knew exactly what he was doing when he decided to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays. With the emergence of the franchise's young stars, Toronto is bound to find success in 2021 and beyond, which drew Springer in.
Springer said as much on Wednesday, indicating that he believes his new team has the chance to be a World Series contender for many years to come.
"I think they're right there," Springer said Wednesday, according to Sportsnet. "When you play against this team like I have, you can see the talent, can see the potential in their lineup ... in their arms. I think with some guidance, I think guys like Bo Bichette, Cavan Biggio, Nate Pearson, and Vladdy (Guerrero Jr.) ... will shine. I think this team is built to win and I think they're ... built to win for a long time."
Springer, who agreed to a six-year, $150 million deal with the Blue Jays, spent seven seasons with the Houston Astros, slashing .270/.361/.491 with 174 home runs and 458 RBI.
The 31-year-old helped lead the Astros to a World Series title in 2017 and was named MVP of the Fall Classic that year. He is a three-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger.
In Toronto, he's joining a lineup that includes Guerrero Jr., Biggio, Bichette, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Teoscar Hernandez and Randal Grichuk. With Springer on board, Toronto hopes to contend for the top spot in the AL East in 2021.
