Giants reveal Opening Day starter against Yankees

With Opening Day set for March 30, the New York Yankees and Gerrit Cole finally know who they will be facing on the mound. The San Francisco Giants announced Tuesday that Logan Webb will get the start at Yankee Stadium.

Webb, 26, has emerged over the past two seasons as one of the more intriguing young arms in the National League while assuming the ace role for the Giants.

Using a four-pitch mix, per Statcast, Webb induces a lot of contact on the ground. He has a 57.7 ground ball percentage for his career, well above average.

Since 2021, Webb has 26 wins, a 2.96 ERA and a 1.136 WHIP over 340.2 innings. He had a 15-9 record and 2.90 ERA in 2022 and finished 11th in the Cy Young Award voting.

Webb's numbers against the American League in inter-league play, however, aren't quite as strong. Through 15 starts, he holds a 4.19 ERA and 1.435 WHIP. Webb has never faced the Yankees.

The Yankees will counter with Cole, who will be making his fourth consecutive Opening Day start for New York. Cole is 1-1 in those outings, with no decisions in each of the past two seasons.

In 2022, Cole lasted just four innings on Opening Day against the Boston Red Sox. He finished the season with a 13-8 record, 3.50 ERA and a league-leading 257 strikeouts.
